*Starcross* is a text-based adventure game developed and published by Infocom in 1982. It is part of Infocom's catalog of interactive fiction, which was known for its sophisticated parser and engaging storytelling. The game was written by an unknown author, as Infocom often credited its games to a fictional Implementor rather than individual writers. *Starcross* was released for multiple platforms, including the Commodore PET, Apple II, Atari 8-bit, and IBM PC, among others.
The game is set in outer space and involves the player exploring a mysterious alien artifact. The player assumes the role of a space explorer tasked with investigating a strange, doughnut-shaped object near Pluto. The narrative is driven by text descriptions and commands, requiring players to type instructions to interact with the environment, solve puzzles, and progress through the story. The game's science fiction theme and intricate puzzles were well-received, showcasing Infocom's ability to create immersive experiences despite the limitations of text-based interfaces.
*Starcross* is notable for its inclusion of a physical feelie, a small prop or document included with the game to enhance the player's experience. This was a common practice for Infocom games, adding a tactile element to the otherwise text-based gameplay. The game has since become a classic example of early interactive fiction and is remembered fondly by fans of the genre. It remains a part of Infocom's legacy as a pioneer in narrative-driven gaming.
