The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a text-based interactive fiction game developed by Infocom and released in 1984. It is based on the popular science fiction series of the same name by Douglas Adams, who also co-designed the game with Steve Meretzky. The game is known for its humor, challenging puzzles, and faithful adaptation of the source material, capturing the quirky and absurd tone of the books.
The game was released for multiple platforms, including the Commodore PET, Apple II, IBM PC, and others. It is a text-adventure game, meaning players interact with the world by typing commands, and the game responds with descriptions of the environment and outcomes of actions. The gameplay is notoriously difficult, with many puzzles requiring creative and often non-intuitive solutions, which has made it both a beloved classic and a source of frustration for players.
Infocom was renowned for its high-quality interactive fiction games, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is considered one of their standout titles. The game includes a Feelies package, a collection of physical items that enhance the experience, such as a pair of Peril Sensitive Sunglasses and a Don't Panic button, which are references to the series. The game remains a significant part of gaming history and is often cited as a prime example of Infocom's innovative approach to storytelling and gameplay.
